Some people inherit china. Some inherit jewelry. I inherited denim.
My mom has always had an incredible eye for timeless style. Long before I ever thought about fashion or design, she was quietly teaching me what lasts. She saved my baby overalls, little Levi's, and tiny denim jackets because she believed the best pieces never really go out of style.
She also saved her own denim from the '60s through the '90s, with classic cuts, beautiful washes, and a broken-in beauty you just can't buy. I practically lived in them. Looking back, I realize I inherited more than her clothes. I inherited her eye.
As a teenager, I bought my first pair of denim overalls, and they quickly became my favorite thing I owned. Before long, I sewed a patch onto them that simply read LOVE. I had no idea then that Scripture tells us, "God is love." That full circle still gives me chills.
I never got rid of those overalls (or the patch). They're stained, thin, marked, patched, and re-patched. To me, they're gold. Mom was right, some things become more valuable because they're used, not despite it.
Today, the baby overalls I wore have been worn by each of our three girls, and they're folded away again, waiting for the possibility of another generation. That pair I bought as a teenager is still hanging in my closet too, only now our oldest is almost tall enough to wear them.
